The Substance
The filmmaker's daring satire addresses the tyranny of women's appearance along with the feared consequences of growing older. The veteran actress delivers a masterful acting turn playing Elisabeth, a mature film star forced into hosting a fitness program on TV. Presence Film
Steven Soderbergh tests his creative boundaries through this clever supernatural story captured wholly through the eyes of the phantom. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their fresh home, the camera – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. Chloe seems conscious of the poltergeist, and the entity appears guarding her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that may be unexpected. This Self-Referential Film
Cage wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame through this self-referential adventure. He acts as an egotistical film star called Nicolas Cage who agrees to a million-dollar gig to appear at a festive event at a Mediterranean location for the wealthy Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Hired by the intelligence agency to spy on the potential kingpin, his unique performing skills proves useful. October 11th, 9pm, Channel 4
This Creepy Thriller
The director's claustrophobic thriller holds up well despite the lack of a follow-up. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, several child abductions has made the youth frightened. Once Finney gets captured by the villain and held captive in a cellar, he anticipates the worst. But the disconnected phone on the wall repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators providing assistance, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, nighttime, on Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the conflict between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for greed in Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation regarding the shamed TV preacher and her felon spouse. Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who declares early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals begin monetising the people's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of tacky decor, bad makeup and insincerity, yet the lead actress succeeds to show the real-life figure with compassion. October 14th, late night, on Film4
